Right before I turned 50, during a random medical procedure, I weighed in at an alarming 200 lbs. I had always hovered around the 190 level which was still too much, but I had grown to accept it as just getting older. It seemed like this was the appropriate time to get serious again about fitness, or it wasn’t going to happen.
With my wife Rhonda, also a former athlete, on board partly for accountability but also because she had some goals for herself, we began to ask our friends if they knew anyone that could help us with both diet and physical fitness. Ashley Reese was extremely highly recommended by a friend who we trust and thus on November 18th 2015, we began the journey to change our lifestyle.
I set modest goals, which at the time didn’t seem so modest, but weighing 200 lbs with 25% body fat, I felt if I could get to 185 and 15% body fat, I would be satisfied. I also had a dream of being able to run and play sports with limited knee pain, but was not optimistic this would happen and really just wanted to lose some weight. I exceeded these weight goals in roughly 6 weeks, and by this time our new approach to eating and exercise had become a complete lifestyle change that I don’t ever envision regressing from.
Yes, Rhonda and I put in the work, but without Ashley’s wisdom, guidance, coaching and encouragement it would not have been possible. He is the most knowledgeable person I have ever known in the areas of diet/fitness and the relationship between the two. I will say as a former collegiate athlete, and having never consulted a personal trainer, I was skeptical. But the quick results coupled with the continual progress and truly fun approach to it has made me a believer. All of this is due to the professionalism and expertise of Ashley Reese.
As of today, I am happy to say I currently weigh 169 lbs, have close to 10% body fat, feel stronger, and have more energy than at any time in the last 15 years. And, this past weekend was able to compete in a soccer tournament which included 3 games in 36 hours, with no knee pain! This after having two meniscus surgeries, in the last 10 years and being told the arthritic pain was just something I would have to learn to live with. I can’t recommend Ashley Reese strongly enough, if you have diet and fitness goals you are struggling to attain on your own. You WILL see results if you simply do what he tells you to do and put in the effort.
After having twins, I had been on and off spurts of going to the gym for two years. I had tried morning routines, evening routines, and making workout plans ahead of time, but nothing stuck beyond a couple months. I would find excuses to skip, excuses to end early, and couldn’t find time to refresh my workout plans. I jumped at the opportunity when I found what I knew was the perfect program for me.
Finally! A routine that works for me, fit my lifestyle, and got me quick results. I needed the appointment, the obligation, no excuses, no cutting short. All I have to do is show up and be ready to work hard to make myself fit again. I’d train with my trainer for months and made sure I ate the correct nutrition regiment. I lost fat, gained muscle, and along the way I’ve earned new body parts to show off!!!
Now, after accomplishing what I felt like I could never achieve, I have become passionate about helping others scale those same hurdles. I have gained my certification in order to empower and coach people to help them reach their goals and fitness potential.
Every morning my bedroom looked like a disaster. Clothes all over the floor because nothing ever “fit” the way I wanted it too. I was 32, two years post baby, and I could not rid myself of the last 10lbs of pregnancy weight.
Treadmill, supplements, gym membership, shakes, self help books, you name it-I purchased it. I had thought for a while about hiring a trainer, but I talked myself out of it every time. I believed I could solve this problem…but the truth was, I couldn’t.
After visiting my physician for my annual check up, he told me I needed to begin taking cholesterol medicine and medicine to lower my blood sugar. This was no longer a vanity problem but now a major health concern as I have a family history of heart disease and diabetes. I experienced my defining moment right there in that doctors office.
From the beginning of my fitness journey, I realized Ashley was invested in my health as well as my fitness goals. He took me grocery shopping, monitored my food logs, and in the first week of training I lost 6lbs and never felt better in my life. Eleven weeks later, I was down 21lbs and surpassed not only my pre-pregnancy weight, but I now weighed what I did the day I graduated high school!
In 90 days, I not only changed my life but I extended it. I lowered my cholesterol 50 points, reduced my blood sugar 25 points, and could now wear anything I wanted to.
I am thankful every day for making that initial commitment to myself and to my family, to do better. I am grateful that I had a personal trainer like Ashley Reese to make me believe that I could.
My name is Nick De Groot I was born with Spina Bifida and have had 49 surgeries since birth. July 22 2015 I had tethered spinal cord surgery with the possibility of never walking again. In May 2016 I started working out at Defining Moment Fitness with Chris Robinson.
